Thinking Out Loud
Re-reading Shell has made me think I'm going in the wrong direction with the packaging. I might do something far more understated. From the distance of a few years, it's easy to think of it as Dlane's book... but it's Thenet's, and the eperu aesthetic is austere. I'll have to do more new work for it, but a lot less than I was planning, which will mean the book will come out faster.

• Still trying to figure out a good way to scan oversized art. Kinko's has an oversize scanner, but the last scans I got back from them had digital artifacts. I ended up stitching "Hadara and the Sun King" together by hand, which was... not... fun. *sigh* Getting a scan of "Willow" I can actually print has so far been a non-starter.

• Right now "Just Because (I Love You)" is on the painting board because the paper I want to put the baby+dragon piece is in the mail. Hopefully it'll come soon because I'm utterly intimidated by "Just Because." That order also contains replacement brushes for the three that I've destroyed finishing these last two paintings... yes, I'm still trying to get a good scan for the postcards to send the people who sponsored those brushes, and they're already being replaced! *shaking head*

• I'm just now going through sketchbooks 11-20 for the Retrospective... if you want me to scan more pictures from this set, you can do that here. Remember to tell me your LJ Name so I can list you as a sponsor!

• Also, I've figured out the third illustration for the Admonishments and am trying to put that together now. I can tell it's going to be late, though. It's complicated.

• Related to all this scanning/archiving of artwork... I found somehow that I got water into one of the portfolios I use to store old originals, which ruined my original of "Ragna." I need to get more of these things out of my house before I destroy them. :P

• Finally, [info]arielstarshadow has cracked the top five commenter list, and in doing so has asked so many questions or made so many leading statements that I'm just vibrating with the need to write or draw things. Comments are love!

Hmmm...you may have to actually talk to an honest-to-goodness "printing place" about scanning (as opposed to the "copy" places like Kinko's). It'll likely be more expensive, but that's what patronage is for! You might also find out if they would give you a "bulk rate" discount and if so, just bring in everything you've done that you can't scan yourself and scan it in. That way, everything is committed to digital memory for posterity and preservation (and future possible prints). Then, if an original gets damaged, at least you still have the digital version.

Can you put your originals on your walls, to avoid another "water" incident? I'm trying to think of other places you might be able to put originals so as to preserve them - I don't suppose you have an "extra" closet that could become the "art" closet? (I can hear the hysterical laughter all the way out here in Colorado).

Any chance you'll take pictures of the progress of the third Admonishments illustration? I don't know how far along you are, but I'd love to see, oh...ten-twenty or so photos of the work in progress, from the very early stages (as in, the first beginnings of the sketch) to complete (and if you wanted to write a little about each step, that would be even more awesome). If not for this one (because you may be too far along at this point) - maybe the next?

It's a shame you don't like the graphic novel format because your work just screams for it - a la (sorry, no accent marks today) the old Elfquest comics, which were originally done in black and white. :)

As for the last.... steeples fingers Excellent. I'm in the 130's...on my first pass-through. I'll have to make a second go-through because there were some drawings that I wanted to comment on, but the thought didn't quite gel.

Unfortunately, I have more originals than I have wall. I think the easiest solution might be... well, to sell them. I've joined a local art league that organizes exhibits and gallery showings, which would at least get some of them circulating outside my house, but I think this is just a message from the universe to stop hoarding them.

Photographing the Admonishments illustration? Hmm. I hadn't thought of it. I tend to keep those quiet until I'm done because they're part of the "story" and it would be like releasing drafts. I wonder if there's interest in seeing the draft, or if it would take away from the impact of the finished piece/story/illustration?

As for graphic novels... I just can't do it. It would take so long, and I have so many stories in my head, that some things would never see the light and that would make me sad!

Well, you could always take the photos, but release them all in one fell swoop when the piece is finished?

Selling is a good idea. Can you get some photos up in your marketplace on your website, with prices? That might help, too.

Hmm. That's not a bad thought, about the photos. :)

And yes, I should list some of the art. The originals for the Aphorisms have been available for a while ("The Exception" got bought already), but I haven't actually put them up.

I feel like I'm being lazy when I'm really just overcommitted. o_O

Is there anyone local who could help you take some photos, etc?

Not that I know personally. Maybe someone in the local arts league will know, though. I might try that, now that I've joined. :)

I might be being ditzy, but did I or did I not see that you'd be selling prints of "Just Because?"

I adore the 19x13 of "If you guard me" and am hoping for more.

:)

If she doesn't, I'm going to hire ninja to go in, make a very good scan of the thing, and leave a bunch of prints in her living room so that I can throw money at her for that. NINJA. NINJA PRINTERS.

*beth pokes her current funds and grumbles; lack of flow makes her miserly, and she doesn't like being miserly*

Once I finish it, yes. If I have to stitch it together from eight different scans, I will get prints out of that one. :)

And these other two!

We do business with a company called Reprographics here locally, and they provide 24x36 prints for us. They've been very good for us and are reliable. We've had them scan large format full color marker renderings for us, one being at somewhere around 36x48 (it was an epic rendering). When we got the images back (on disk, too large to email), at full resolution and full zoom (100%) you could clearly see the grain of the paper and the variation the marker made soaking into the paper. Of course it looked great when zoomed out, but it was definitely a high-quality scan that we could easily resize and alter as needed without any trouble.

They do have some branches over in Tampa, according to Google. You might want to try them and see if they can do what you need done, instead of dealing with Stinkos.

Any idea on the cost for said scans?

If you were to submit a 24x36 full color piece of art for full color scanning, the locals here would charge $25, so they just told me. However, they are all independently operated, so I can't guarantee that price would hold over in the Tampa locations.

I thought that some print reproduction places take really good quality photos of the art? Investing in that level of camera equipment might be cost prohibitive though.

Yeah, I haven't been able to find a place that does fine art photography, though I've called around. I'm still looking!

I don't want to do it myself, frankly. I'm not good with cameras. :)

ooh, Ragna... I don't recall seeing many illustrations of her. Not exactly how i pictured her, but still very fitting.

Must go back and re-read....
