Hadara's Robe of Stars
[info]elusivetiger fixed my feng shui issue with my painting location (we're doing a lot of work to the house, which means things are constantly in flux; for the past few weeks I haven't liked the area I used to paint in). The result was that I was much happier and spent a lot longer working tonight than I expected. On to Hadara's robe with its finicky patterns!

Painting over the frisket

Here's me painting the first layers over the frisket film.

Peeling it Away

And peeling it away... you can see how delicate it is. I was using the "extra tack" version of the film; I think in the future I might try the normal low tack, because this one stuck a little more than it needed to. Running the paper through the printer already abuses it a bit, and the film on top of that was just too much for the surface of the paper. I was basically pleased with the result, though I had to be more careful painting over the filmed areas than I think will be necessary with the lower tack film.

Stopping for the Night

Where I stopped for the night. I painted the background of the patterns in, then put down the basecoat on her skin (I'm going to have such fun doing that warm toffee color!) and worked a little on the Sun King's robes before I gave up for the evening. You can see the book of patterns I was using propped up against the wall.

The scan's a little skewed, but it gives you a better look at the patterns at least:

I have so much to do it's just falling right out of my head lately. But I think having this new painting place will help me immensely.

um, hi! I was wondering how the requested one card draws work? Am I correct that it's a free service you can ask for once a month? I'd really like a card on my birthday, May 1st, at 9:05am, my time, which is noon o-five your time, I think. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing. This is fascinating to watch.

I'm glad that you've found a comfortable place to paint, too.

Fascinating to see the process - I've never used the frisket film, and may have to try it. This is going to be another stunning piece!

I love these little insights into your process!

It reminds me, too! I did a little more digging into the M graham watercolors. This site- http://www.wetpaintart.com/Product_Archive/Paints%20&%20Mediums/M_Graham/M-Graham-WC/GRAWC-CC.html has swatches of all the colors actually available. Weird that they wouldn't have their newer colors on the official webpage. We don't carry all the new colors, but we could definitely order them for you.

Lovely process shots, and the work you're doing on her robe makes me wonder: have you ever done resist dyeing on fabric? You could create some of those beautiful patterns on things you, yourself wear. You can buy blank (i.e., plain white) shirts and dresses to do the dyeing on.

I saw a craft post that involved putting tape on a black shirt, then spritzing it with bleach. The result was a pale speckled color on the bleached portions between black stripes. I thought it would be fun to arrange the tape in more interesting patterns, like chevrons or basketweave or knotwork; or even to cut out designs and stick them on.

Oh, you definitely could. In fact, they sell pastes that you can put on black shirts and other garments that will bleach out just the spots where you put on the paste, so there are all sorts of possibilities that way, too.
