Good Things, and a Request
I really enjoyed the Draw yesterday... I hope to go back to doing that monthly. Even though it's time-consuming and tiring, it leaves me happier after than before I started. Let's hope, then! Right now I'm back to being up every 2-3 hours all night (and all day), so I'm a bit frazzled. I need more sleep to do this more often!

Meanwhile, I am overwhelmed. I don't know how, but more books have sold and I am now at 56 ("60!" [info]dracosphynx promises smugly), and ten customer reviews, all of which made me sniffle. I... well. Like I said, I'm overwhelmed...!

I'm putting together the flier at the same time I'm doing the bookplates, and had some discussion with the voices in my head:

[info]haikujaguar: Some of these reviews are so much! It's typical to put quotes from reviews on marketing hand-outs, but... it feels like I'm being excessively proud of myself.

The Calligrapher: Excessive pride would be pretending not to value the opinions of these others, or believing that you alone will sell this work, when in fact it is the kind words of others that will truly make the difference. Bow to that truth, and ask permission.

I hope that made sense, since I haven't been sleeping much. But... um, I would be greatly honored if those of you who have written reviews, on and off Amazon, would be willing to let me put them on the flier, and whether I can attribute a name to your words. I understand if you'd rather not! But like I said... I would be honored.

Well, I already am. But... you understand, probably.

I wish I could go back to sleep. -_-

Feel free to use any bits of my review that you want to. Heck, you can even call me the In Nomine Line Editor, if you feel like title dropping, for what that one is worth. *grin* (Possibly not much, but hey, there's the option.)

*pokes the Calligrapher, though* What will truly sell the work is the work itself. All we're doing is saying, "Hey, we liked it enough to buy it and recommend it to others."

(There are plenty of books that annoy the pee-waddin' tar outta me (to quote my mother) by having plenty of quotes from all kinds of places, but a scanty book-summary-blurb and no "inside the book" bits at all.

Hmmm. Word of mouth seems to do it most. Perhaps we ought to have our LJ accounts listed with quotes -- "look, you can go check out our LJs and see if our opinions are likely to impact yours." O:D )

word of mouth

Indeed - that's exactly what it is, I believe. As the community grows, so will the number of books sold. Though [info]fireriven is doing a review for GMR, so that could have an impact as well.

Oh, and I've been meaning to do this for a while (ever since I wandered over to your journal and looked around) but keep forgetting...

OMG U RITE IN NOMINE!!?!?!

Ahem. Sorry, but lolcat seems best for those sorts of exclamatory remarks. I haven't played in years (not enough time these days), but I do love In Nomine as a system.

*giggle*

Yes, I've written various things. Let me shill you them! Available in charming PDF form from e23! No DRM, and if you make an account there, you can always re-download them if there's any problem. O:D

(And reviews, mmmm, useful too! Sort of a form of word-of-mouth, those.)

Mai money is in ur pocketses!

laughs The serpent is brilliant.

I own...hmmm...without going out and looking...close to a dozen In Nomine books? Somewhere around there. I've tried to slow down my purchase of RPG books because of the whole no-time-to-play anymore aspect. (I've had only marginal success, I admit).

I could say that I'm working on a new mechanics system for an RPG, but that would really be a lie since it's just nebulous thoughts in my head.

Yaay! Has gots monies!

(And thank you -- I saw the base for it, and, well, the laughing snake!)

I coo at you happily at your ownership of the books. Because. Y'know. Makes me happy. (It's hard to come up with new mechanics systems! So you're probably working at it as much as many. O:> )

Word of mouth sells books. Sells anything really. Good or bad. :)

Off-topic - would you allow me to post the five-card reading you did for me to my LJ? It's perfectly all right to say no.

Ulp.

'K.

(There just went my excuse to keep all that in the dark - I didn't want to say that when I asked you because I didn't want to sway your decision and make you agree to something you'd rather not)

Absolutely, feel free to use if you wish, I'd be honored.

Also, I noticed on [info]fireriven's journal that she sent in a review to the Green Man Review. So you may find another rush of books selling when that appears.

I always provide tearsheets of my reviews to the author and publisher when I have their contact info, and I always give permission for them to excerpt the review for promotional purposes. Sometimes my reviews appear in places that hang onto reprint rights for a while. In this case, my first Aphorisms review was simply posted to several online venues, so you can reprint the whole thing if you wish. I keep meaning to review it separately for a favorite magazine, but I just haven't been able to wedge that into my schedule yet. Yesterday got swept up in a revealing update of "Peacock Hour."

Yeah go for it. I'm not sure how much of my review is palatable or appropriate, but you can use as much of it as you like. I don't mind if you post the whole thing, but I'd be surprised if you did.

My review of The Aphorisms should appear in the May 2nd update of Green Man Review. I would give you permission to use the review any way you wish, but I don't think that's my right. Let me check the site...

This is what GMR says regarding reprints:

Entire Contents Copyright 2007, Green Man except where specifically noted. Permission is granted to a review's author to reprint the review on the author's own Web site (but not in a periodical or along with collected reviews by other writers). When the author so reprints his or her own review on his or her own Web site, it is sufficient to include our copyright/link (as below). All other reprints may only be used at the sole discretion and with express permission of Green Man. The author may not grant reprint rights to others. To request other reprint use, contact Cat Eldridge.

However, that seems to be for reprinting the entire thing. I've seen several sites quote reviews that appeared on Green Man Review, most notably (for me) my recent review of Paper Cities: An Anthology of Urban Fantasy, edited by Ekaterina Sedia.

By all means, use my review or parts thereof if it will help. It's pretty short, and I didn't exactly follow the guidelines, and I'm nobody in terms of influence in the literary world, but I really, really do want to help.

BTW as I think ahead toward Winter Holiday presents, Aphorisms appears more than once on the list. Please don't give up hope until after Gifting Time.
