The Admonishments of Kherishdar: CALLING

CALLING
M.C.A. Hogarth

alurais [ ah loo RAYZ ], (noun) — loyalty, allegiance, adoration

      "Kor."
The sound of his name raises his eyelids.
      "What day is it, Kor?"
"It is the second day of my trial."
I nod. "We are hardly begun, we two."
      "Yes, Thirukedi."
      "Why are we here, Kor?"
"Because there is no Civilization without Shame, Thirukedi."
I smile. "Why am I here?
"Because there is no Shame without Civilization."
"And you? Why are you here?"
"Because I would serve You, and to serve You I must feel the touch of every tool I use on those I would Correct."
"What day is it again, Kor?"
"The second day of my trial, Thirukedi."
"We two, we are hardly begun."

I remove the gag from his mouth, candle-flame glimmering in the long arc of spittle connecting it to his lips.
"What day is now, Kor?" I ask, soft.
Hoarse. "It is the thirteenth day of my trial, Thirukedi."
      "Why are we here, Kor?"
"Because I have not done learning."
      "When will it end?"
      "When you decree, Thirukedi."
      "And why is that?"
"Because Civilization demarks the boundaries of Shame always. I await Your word. Your word is law."
I nod and touch the back of my hand to his sweat-slicked cheek... wishing he were not so strong. "It is the thirteenth day of your trial, Kor. You may give over."
"No, Thirukedi," he breathes, eyes closed.
"We abide," I say, and send for the ropes.

"And now, Kor?" I ask, my voice echoing in the stone hall.
"It is... a day... some day, in my trial," he says. I have blinded him with the eyes-as-pearls drops and this has stolen his equanimity at last. I cup his face to gauge the tremor in his body.
"Why are we here?" I ask.
"Because Civilization requires Correction," he whispers. "Always Correction and never torture."
"Why am I here?" I ask.
His eyes seek my face, though he cannot see. "Because Civilization alone can Correct Shame."
      "Why are you here?"
"Because I serve at your word," he says. "Because Shame is blind without the rule of law. Because without society, Shame is mute. Because Civilization must bind and shape Shame to its purpose... and You are Civilization, society and law."
"What day is it?" I ask.
      "I don't know."
I draw him from the pedestal and reach for the vial as he breathes raggedly against my breast. Not since the first of his order has any priest had every tool and method at his disposal, for no servant of Shame may inflict on another what he has not suffered himself. And he has endured them all over six long weeks... and only now, at last, lost himself.
I tip the astringent into the first eye. As it waters, clearing the nacre, I ask, "Why don't you know?"
      "Because you must tell me."
Even as I lead him back, I smile. "It is the last day of your trial, Kor Nai'Nerillin-osulkedi."
      "Is it done?"
"It is done, Shame's servant. You are mine."

A name, a name...at last we have a name.

Does Shame serve until death? Or is there a retirement, of sorts, after a period of time?

*nods* Makes perfect sense, yessssss.

Are they ritual words, memorized, or are they just, well, words for the ritual?

Nah, the questions are different every time, and the responses are free-form. Thirukedi asks based on who the person is, to get the understanding he wants. Kor in particular is a bit of a philosopher for this position.

My working title for this one was antiphon/responsorial, though, so you can see that was the foremost thing in my mind. :)

I can see why this is one of your favorites. Several of the Aphorisms evoked a lasting response in me, but I think this is the only Admonishment to have done the same.

Well done.

I don't think that I'd care to read it again, or see the full illustration. I see the logic and sense of it, but what's being done to him is not what I was expecting when I read the word "trial". You wrote it very tastefully, but it will haunt the rest of my day.

This makes sense. The rule about what tools Shame may use makes a great deal of sense.

Though I must ask- those other servants of Shame, who could not use all the tools, when did they do when a tool they could not use was needed? Did they sent the individual to the Emperor? Because he can clearly use all the tools (and has had them used on himself?).

That is incredibly intense.

So how do they weed out the candidates who might enjoy pain, and enjoy inflicting pain on others? I can see how this ritual might create incredibly empathic correctors, but I can also see how it might attract borderline psychopathic ones.

Then again, maybe Shame isn't exactly sane by human standards either... hmm.

Apparently I'm a bit of an abberation with my response of bursting into tears partway through.

Then again, I think that was someone small.. we did not understand what "Shame's Trial" referenced prior to reading this. There's been some confusion, trying to figure out what he could have done to require judge and trial..

More thoughts later when we've sorted ourselves again.

A fanfic: Questioning
[info]hafoc
2008-04-11 12:28 am UTC (link)
“May I ask how your quill offends you so?”

“Masirkedi! Please forgive me, I didn’t hear you enter.”

“Stay in your seat, Artficer.” He looked at me with that expression of amused tolerance I’ve learned to love. Even his guardians looked amused, if that were possible.

So I told him what was wrong with the quill. “I can't use it away from my writing table. For example, when I inspect the pumps in the mines. I could use a claw-stick, but the charcoal smudges so. Now, if I filled a tube with cotton and made a wick--”

“By all means, invent a traveling quill if you can. It sounds useful. But today, come with me to see the priest of Shame. Or rather, he who would be Shame’s priest. His Trial continues today. The Emperor will be there. It would please me to arrange your first chance to see him.”

Some have told me that the accident that broke my neck when I was an infant has done nothing to make my face unlovely. True or not, people watch my face. I wish they did not, for I have never been able to control my expressions as I should. I feared my Lord could read there my thoughts when he spoke the name of Shame.

He waited as I took my canes, struggled to my feet, and made my way to his side. I sometimes envy those who can move with grace and without thought. How wonderful it must be to walk without the need to plan each step!

His guardians surrounded us as we moved slowly through the sunlit streets. And then I found that my Lord had, indeed, read my thoughts.

“I have known those who serve Civilization well, yet are unhappy in their service," he said. "The Exception is one of these. Yet if she could be Corrected to be as other people, would a wise ruler allow it?”

“She is the Exception, Masirkedi. I am just a maker of tools.”

“You are what you are. I have learned to listen to your questions. They help me better serve my people. I hope you will come to understand that, and be content.”

I nodded, accepting his words and finding some peace in them, for the moment at least. Slowly we made our way to the place of the trial.

I was just inside the door, and at first I couldn't see what was happening. But then I saw the Emperor. He did not look my way or speak to me, not then; if he had gazed into my eyes in the instant I first saw him, I think it would have killed me.

He almost made me believe in the Gods. There is a power in him I can’t explain to those who have not seen him, and need not explain to those who have. Why, then, should I try? But I was happy, because for the first time I could remember, I believed. I believed in Thirukedi.

But sorrow tore at me as well. The trial was terrible. Why did our Precedents need to be so cruel? What could justify infliction of such suffering?

“Why are we here, Kor?”

“Because there is no civilization without Shame, Thirukedi.”

In his words, understanding struck me.

I was the first. I knew before any other, perhaps before even Thirukedi himself, that this youth would prevail. He had to be the true servant of Shame. He had given me the Correction I needed without even knowing I was there.

I knew that Shame is a kind of pain. Yet this pain was virtue, not torture, for it Corrected the lost and ensured the survival of Civilization itself.

And my pain? In that instant it seemed my own pain was as important as his, for no civilization without it could long endure.

In that moment I knew that this Ai-Naidar named Kor was my brother. For he is Shame. And I? I am Doubt.

But I could be wrong.

This is a very...interesting piece. It made me nervous and woke feelings of...well, not quite revulsion, but something akin, in me. It was in questioning what it awoke that I saw something in it; I'm trying to decide whether it's arrogant of me to think that what I saw was not what was envisioned with the writing of the piece. In fact, I'm not at all certain that, given where I am, I can understand the thought behind it.

...or maybe I'm underestimating at least one of us.
