The Admonishments of Kherishdar: PASSION

PASSION
M.C.A. Hogarth

ama [ ah MAH ], (verb) — to long or yearn

      It is an Ai-Naidari ideal to love all people equally as manifestations of the same spirit: "aimeth", we say, "oneness." Most Ai-Naidar spend their lives struggling to balance oneness and more singular loves, but I am fortunate: all fathrikedi—Decorations, living statues, bed-warmers—are chosen for this ability to love without jealousy; it is the measure of our beauty, how completely we give ourselves to aimeth. I was twice-blessed, for as a mute I understood implicitly how words can obfuscate the spirit. So exemplary was my practice of aimeth, my Regal made a gift of me to Thirukedi Himself.
      But the moment I witnessed Shame's trial I was lost.
      When Thirukedi sent for me I prostrated myself, head in His lap and the length of my spine exposed, hands tucked beneath my chest. He cupped my mouth and set the other hand between my shoulder-blades; so we abided.
      Presently, He said, "The master of Decorations tells me you wish to serve Shame."
      I nodded, resting my face along His wrist.
      "He will have to know."
      Again I nodded, but more slowly. I had been one of Thirukedi's instruments during the trial. It was one of the memories that lingered, sweat and steel and breath.
      Gently, He said, "Passion is a hardship. Do you truly want this road?"
      I closed my eyes. Nodded one final time.
      The following week I was delivered to the shrine. I feared that Shame would avoid me, knowing my role in his ascension, but he folded me into his retinue without hesitation. His use of me was strictly ornamental—we rarely touched—but those hours he spent seated near me, refreshed by my beauty, were among the happiest of my life. When I was parted from him, my appetite failed... even the sunlight seemed dim.
      It was an inevitability that he discovered me. He was Shame, trained to see such things, and in a weak moment I failed to mask my adoration quickly enough. He halted and the shock of his realization froze me trembling in place.
      Please, I thought, please, don't send me away.
      I assumed he would speak, but instead he caught my chin and answered as I would have been forced to: with his face, with regretful eyes.
      It doesn't matter, I thought, resting my face in his hand. I know you don't love me. I would rather serve you in whatever way you will have me than be apart from you.
      He eased his hand just low enough to allow the air to separate us. I thrust my cheek against his palm, closing my eyes. I'm sure. Honor my choice, please, please.
      His thumb brushed my lower lip. I heard him sigh.
      From then on, Shame observed an appropriate distance, never teasing me with false intimacy, leaving me to live with my choice, with the breathlessness of euphoria and despair. Sometimes I think of leaving, but never for long. How cruel yearning, and how false, for who can ever truly possess another? Oh God of Civilization, how true your words!

Wow.

So many times I have tried to voice the meaning of "passion" for myself.

And never could I capture it as you have here.

Thank you.

This raises all sorts of questions in my head - this is part of the Admonishments, yet how do you Correct such? Is there anything to Correct? If so, would the Correction be to send the fathrikedi away?

Or is it a dangling "Correction," in a sense, that Shame remains apart from someone who loves him?

I am also *blinkblink* at the "Shame's trial" bit, but eventually... It seems that there is a ritual that the priest of Shame must undergo, before he can start doing the job? ...Something that involves some kind of Corrective-like... trials?

Interesting.

You want the next story. Aiming for Thursday, but Monday at the latest, depending on whether I can finish off this painting...

(As an aside, I really am gunning for Thursday because "Sunny Days" is a nude and it would be fun to have it coincide with [info]razzek and [info]stokerbramwell's "Naked Thursday" observation. Heh.)

Except that if you don't love someone the same way, how is it good for you to pretend otherwise or try? Shame is who he is - he doesn't love this man the same way he loves Shame. Sometimes, that's just the way things work.

And yeah - I also want to see this trial! (Adding) I remember reading another small story where the trial was mentioned, so this only makes my curiosity even greater.

I'll put this here since you may not see my response to [info]haikujaguar (the only thing I wish LJ did a little differently was to let all subsequent sub-responses be visible to all those participating, but there's likely no way for it to figure that out).

This story was very powerful for me, in that I've been in Shame's position twice in my life. It's never easy, and I eventually made the same decision Shame did - to tell them "I'm sorry, but I don't love you that way. I leave whether you can still be in my life, knowing this, up to you."

I don't know whether that's healthy or not - for either party. The one impassioned, as the fathrikedi says so well, goes through tremendous highs and lows. The other tends to feel guilt, and also some resentment.

This is wonderful. And oooohhhhh, he's so beautiful of soul! It can be difficult to love without jealousy, but it's a worthy goal. I think Shame would come to care about him -- he's got a protective streak -- and that's likely to help the balance even if it isn't the same flavor as passion. I can see how the arrangement works for them: challenging, but not impossible. Humans are less skilled in such matters.

Besides, it's probably far from new in Kherishdar, having a servant adore a master so intimately.

In essence, the fathrikedi is Correcting himself, it seems.

But I've known people (myself, even) who have put themselves in this situation... It doesn't work as well for humans, though, because usually once the object of desire knows what's going on, he or she handles it through avoidance. This? This solution is honest, straightforward... and poignant. Tragic, and yet the fathrikedi is as close to his desire as he can possibly be, isn't he?

Not always true. Some learn to be direct, or, at least to give clear signals to avoid confusion.

I think with those who choose to be direct, avoidance comes after - as in, the person is direct and says "I'm sorry, I don't love you," and the logical result of that is that they do in fact, practice some form of avoidance, be it spending less time with the person altogether, or being very careful when they are around him/her.

Shame himself is practicing avoidance, at least in my eyes - not avoiding the fathrikedi's presence, but being sure to avoid intimate contact, being careful of his words and gestures, etc. so as to avoid giving the wrong impression.

Now I know why I felt so attached to him. *thoughtfulquiet* I know exactly what that's like. Exactly to the letter. And I do what he does. And I couldn't imagine life any different without the object of my affection. I hope that some day I'll find someone else to balance that playing field and feed back into me what I feel. But. For now.

If you scorn affection it just hurts. Worse than if you stay. So stay. But with respect.

I think I'll let Sir Edward Dyer comment on this story. By the second part of this piece, I think he read your manuscript (about four centuries) before you wrote it. :D

The lowest trees have tops, the ant her gall,
The fly her spleen, the little sparks their heat,
The slender hairs have shadows, though but small
And bees have stings, although they be not great;
Seas have their source, and so have shallow springs,
And love is love, in beggars as in kings.

Where rivers smoothest run, deep are the fords,
The sundial stirs, yet none perceive it move;
The firmest faith is in the fewest words
The turtles cannot sing, although they love;
True hearts have eyes and ears, no tongue to speak;
They see, they hear, they sigh, and then they break.

A lovely story-- please forgive me for sharing a favorite poem.

I don't know love, but from what I've seen I think love chooses you. It's hard to believe there could be any Correction for that. Still, you're responsible for what you do, not for what you feel...

I have to wonder how the Ai-Naidar deal with people who are multi-talented. Their society seems very specialized to me, and it seems like there would be no good place for someone who was particularly talented at two things that are normally very separate. Or more than two.

Oh, I think the times I've been in the Decoration's position, I've so hoped that my declaration of love would make the difference, would make the other party return my feeling... the breathlessness of euphoria and despair, it's so, so addictive but so draining, very very draining! You waste away before you realize it's happening. I end up yanking myself away...
