The Admonishments of Kherishdar: CRADLE

CRADLE
M.C.A. Hogarth

atse [ ah TSEH ], (noun) — emotional outlets; anything that allows a person to relieve emotional stress in a safe, healthy and socially acceptable way.

"Drink," my mother had said, interrupting my packing for my trip to the capital, where I was to undertake my first assignment for the family business.
Wide-eyed, I accepted the cup from my eldest sister. "But this is until-a-better-time...!"
"In case you hadn't noticed," my aunt said, "You'll be in town for the Tryst."
"You can't possibly mean me to... but... the capital!"
"For your first time?" my sister said, laughing. "Oh you must! What a story to tell!"
I drank the contraceptive while they packed a costume. The following day, nervous and excited, I was off.
The eve of the Winter Tryst fell midway through my visit and found me skirting the edges of one of the largest parks in the city... and there I remained, breathless in the cold, shocked at the sheer size of the gathering. So many Ai-Naidar in one place, so many masks, such rich and varied costumes... I was but a country girl from two worlds out and this was too much for me. I could not turn away, but neither could I find the courage to join the dancers.
      "Waiting for someone?"
The words brushed the back of my neck, the voice male, low, vital. I shuddered. "I... no. Just... watching."
"The Tryst is not for watching," he said, and then I saw him, enigmatic, masked, his grace sensual. "Come," he said, taking my hands, his touch confident.
We danced and to the question he did not ask at the end of the set, I whispered, "Yes."
He took me to the trees, then, bore me back against one of them and kissed the innocence from my lips. I feared—who doesn't?—but where his fingers went the blood seemed to lift to my skin and I muffled my cries against his shoulder. When at last he was with me it was like being a child again, rocked in a cradle: entirely embraced, safe, a new joy evoking an old.
"Sssh," he whispered, when I would have told him he was my first. I quieted, obedient, meeting his eyes through our masks. "Shemena," he whispered—maiden, goddess—"promise me only one thing."
      "Anything," I breathed.
He gathered me up and as I cried out again he whispered against my temple, "Never ever sin."
He gave me to the dance afterwards; there were others that night, but none like him.
I was spending my last hours in the capital at a cafe when a sudden hush fell on the tables next to me. I looked up and—oh, I didn't know his face, but the way he moved—it was him, it was him!
"Shame," the females beside me murmured amongst themselves. I almost dropped my cup.
So many years since that first Tryst, and I have made many small errors of judgement, suitable only for the attention of my elders, my family, my peers.
But I... I have never sinned. For who could Correct me if I fell in love with Shame?

Very touching, and beautiful. A load of questions that spring up about Shame and this young woman, but over all- I don't think I'm going to ask them. I don't think I want to know the answers.

It would be too sad, I think, to hear them.

"For who could Correct me if I fell in love with Shame?"

That is an excellent question. Who indeed? Does our Servant of Shame have any loved ones? Family? Friends? How could he Correct them? I'd like to read a story about how that's handled.

Also, I've been meaning to ask this... It's been nagging at me since I first learned about the anonymous Trysts. One of the reasons we regulate, or at least keep track of who is sleeping with who is the threat of inbreeding. Morals and ethics aside, inbreeding creates health problems.

Now I'm not suggesting that a daughter can't recognize Dad even during the Tryst, but all these Winter siblings... If you don't know who sired you, how can you know if a peer is also a half-sibling?

I concede that unless we include father and daughter, disruptive mutation doesn't occur for a few generations, and in fact animal breeders have used this method for thousands of years to retain desirable traits. But this scenario would have to exclude any unrelated person for a few generations before major disruptions would really start to occur.

That last argument would be highly unlikely, but what about recessive genetic diseases? Things that require both parents to carry a recessive trait in order to express or be passed on. How do the Ai-Naidar handle this?

These are complicated questions, which I will consider.

Here's one for you, though. With few exceptions, you are expected to marry within your caste. How then do you prevent the castes becoming inbred?

That's part of the function of the Winter Tryst.

I am shocked, shocked I tell you! that Shame would drop a hairpin about his identity during the Tryst.

Okay, as an alien, that behavior doesn't seem all that outrageous to me. But there's enough of Kherishdar in these stories for me to achieve immersion, so thinking as an Ai-Naidari, my first reaction was shock when he let slip that line about not sinning.

This is a beautiful and fun story. And it surely illuminates why tops make excellent lovers ... all that knowledge of anatomy and psychology, put to pleasurable use.

I eagerly await the erotica. I have a hard time imagining you being crude or unskilled enough to draw pr0n.

I wasn't sure what to expect from you, when I started reading...with pr0n in mind. But it was well done and very tasteful. ;)

The girl's thoughts were very sweet, and I must say you had me at the edge of my seat the entire story to see where you would fit a Correction (despite its short length). Small Correction though it may be, it fits. I think Shame has inadvertently made sure that she'll try her hardest not to "sin", because she attaches such a strong emotional anchor back to her time with him.

Being a very carnal hooman, I thought that was gorgeous. I felt a bit sad for Shame. And I could identify where he's coming from a little.

Preists are teachers in many senses. *thoughtful* I come out of this though, wanting to give him a big ol' hug. Moar hugs plz. Good job. As soon as paycheck physically hits the account, DONATION TIME.

I must agree with the others. This is not pr0n. This was very graceful, very tastefully done, and I wish I had half as much skill in similar matters. My language, I fear, is often too blunt for it. LOL Still, this story made me smile, and I'm grateful for that. Thank you.

Phew! *fans self*

In all seriousness, I have never read any more beautiful and stunning erotica than what you have written. When you write these scenes, you really put passion and love (or fear or any other emotion underlying the act) into the actions. It's not meaningless fluff for the readers or something gratuitous, it's genuine, true, and lovely. Once again, bravo. :)

*le sigh*

I knew I had a thing for Shame (*blushes to the roots of her hair*).

"For who could Correct me if I fell in love with Shame?"

Maybe it's lack of understanding on my part.... but I get a certain sense that Shame holds a certain degree of love for all whom he Corrects. Wouldn't that be the essence of Correction?

Granted... not the passionate Love the speaker seems to indicate... but to some degree...

*swoons again*

I've been pondering this all day.

I think it's really easy to focus on what happens on the surface and miss the truth of what's happening.

It's not a romancic interlude, it's a Correction. Shame's just doing his job here. He saw someone standing isolated from the community and took steps to fix that.

There's also an initiation taking place - the first time anyone has sex is a rite of passage. So, not only was he gently Correcting her, but he was also ushering her into a new life.

I didn't think this was pr0n; I thought it was really beautiful, kinda like how a lot of girls dream their first time might be like. Romantic, a strong but sensitive partner, enjoyable throughout, memorable, you know the rest... *sighs a little*

The fact that she recognized him at the end left "me-sympathizing-as-her" feeling a little, um, naked? exposed? at the end, though. That was the most blushworthy part of it for me; it seems like, letting the most personal part of oneself be free like that, under the cloak of anonymity and the disguise of masks - and then having someone guess "oh, it was you!" would seem really embarrassing to me. That said, that's probably my own non-Ai-Naidari feelings projecting here (maybe they don't feel embarrassment about that?), and of course her recognizing it was him was very important to the story (I'm glad she did, a little jump of joy for me too).

Oh! I read in your replies about Shame slipping, so I guess that it's not common for another to guess a partner's identity? or is it not unexpected for one to recognize another later, after the Tryst? Is it okay to do so? If so, do they keep quiet about it out of respect, or are there gossips? Are they not embarrassed by it? Are the masks more ritual than function for some people, who might TRY to discover who they've paired with it, or is it part of the culture not to want/need/desire to know? (sorry for so many questions! This is curiosity, not criticism; I hope this doesn't read as that)
