Lawful Good
When I did my brush donation drive, I promised that everyone who donated toward the brushes (or bought me one from my Dick Blick Wish List) would get a postcard of the very first picture I painted with them. I started "Willow" once I received them and while I haven't had the chance to finish it, Willow is definitely the first thing I painted with those brushes, and I am doggedly determined it will be the promised postcard picture.

Which means every single painting I've done since then, I've used the old brushes. The Aphorisms cover. Geles. Thirukedi. Collapse. And now I'm about to start Sunny Days... with the old brushes.

I keep telling myself this is ridiculous because Willow was the first piece I touched those brushes to, so technically even if I use the brushes on other pieces that I finish first, it's still the first piece. But I can't... bring... myself to do it.

Can someone get back to me on whether breaking alignment long enough to do something slightly out-of-character would cause me to suffer an XP penalty?

Stop punishing yourself! Use the good brushes!

How hard would it be to offer sponsors their choice of postcard? I love Willow and she's definitely the one I want, but maybe others would prefer something else.

Logically, it makes sense that you should be able to use them on other things, too, since Willow is so close to done.

Emotionally.................. Crud, I never thought I was lawful good. Maybe I'm Lawful Neutral???

I'm not entirely sure. I mean, I go by the Demon Princess of Nitpicking at times, because of attention to detail and the letter of the rules, so... I may have a certain streak of Rules Lawyer, but... Rules Lawyers need Rules. If you see what I mean?

Pish-posh. It's the spirit of intent that's important, not the letter of the law.

I... Never did make a very good paladin. >_>;

: )

No XP penalty for considering the needs of your paintings above a law that you made yourself, that you aren't really breaking, and whose bending won't harm any of us!

Do the needs of "saving" your good brushes until Willow is done outweigh the benefit of using the good brushes on your new paintings?

And not working on Willow (or using the good brushes on other things) doesn't mean you are never going to finish and be able to reward your donors, either!

I think the one thing ALL your donors have in common is a desire to see you succeed. We want you to be able to pursue your arts in the best way possible... not deny yourself something good because of a thing you imposed upon yourself!!

The funny thing is... that's probably the one single thing in the back of my mind that's preventing me. The brushes have a lifespan, and using them "uses them up." I have a line item on my yearly budget that reads: "Replace entire brush set, assuming 3 times a year."

That's about how often I'd have to replace them if I was really diligent and not doing what I'm doing now. So that's what's holding me back, maybe.

Something to consider....

Hrm. I didn't realize they ran out so quickly! Methinks an ongoing brush donation button is a good idea, in that case!!

Ooo! She could make a Brush Donation button for each project. Then she'd have the brushes for Willow, the brushes for Admonisments, the brushes for whichever project is next...

O:D

I didn't donate towards your new brushes so I could get a postcard.

Silly. ;)

I'd rather not get a postcard than have you continue to use the old brushes. Untangle thyself...and let us know if you need help.

I have seen the traditional way a Paladin is often played called "Lawful Stupid" rather than "Lawful Good".

I think you might be verging on "Lawful Stupid", hon. And I mean that with all affection. Violating the spirit of the law to honor the strictest interpretation of the letter is not what you want to be doing, I think. In fact, I think that approaches breaking alignment right there...

The late Mr. Gygax wrote a famous essay about this, which I'm sure you've read. He called it, "Good isn't stupid."

Not sure what XP is, but sympathies. I'm no artist, but the teenagers have destroyed my brushes in school projects, so new ones are about item 124,876 on the list if we ever get out of debt.

The difference between a scuzzy brush and a nice supple blendy one is astonishing. (though for big mural things like set design I still prefer a sponge.)

I think maybe I'm not as chaotic good as I thought ... I'd be hesitant to use the brushes, too, even though I agree with everyone else here. :-)

(Hmm ... maybe we become more lawful as we age? Scary thought!)

Yes, you'll suffer an XP penalty and be required to atone for it by doing three more pictures with the new brush and offering a choice of the postcards. You take the XP penalty until your atonement is completed.

GM over and out!

I don't remember, even, if I sponsored those brushes or not. But I can tell you this: Willow is the first piece of yours I fell in love with after I started reading your journal. And I desperately want to see how she finishes up. But I think punishing yourself by not using the new brushes on other things is helpful to no one and hurtful to you. Use the new brushes! If they are worn out before you get to Willow, we'll buy you more! :)

Or, maybe you can set aside ONE of the new brushes that is only for Willow, and that way, I think you've met both the spirit and the letter of your law.

I love that you are such a gamer geek. :)

Use the new brushes. You didn't say the first picture you FINISHED would be the postcard... it was the first one you PAINTED.

No XP penalty for alignment changed. Slightly out-of-character never got hit with XP penalties in the games I've been in. Gross repeat offenders did, however.

Thusly have I spoken. For... whatever that's worth.

No wonder I typically play Chaotic Good characters... :-P

Alas, I am not the best to advise. I typically play Chaotic Good or Neutral characters, as that is the closest to my personal IRL alignment. So.

OK, I'm actually - see, here's the thing. You promised that the donors would get a postcard of the first picture. OK, and they will, once it's finished. But I don't see anything up there saying "I won't use the brushes for anything else until that picture is done."

I don't see any reason why you can't use your new brushes for whatever it is you're working on.
