The Admonishments, Next Act

Sunny Days Teaser
Act 3, "Methods"
Burn-out • Hubris • Cradle • Passion • Calling

And we have now completed Act 2 of the Admonishments, which means it's time for a patron call!

In our next Act, entitled "Methods," many of your questions are answered: What is Shame's staff like? Why is Shame necessary? How are minors Corrected and is Shame ever involved? What's it like to be a fathrikedi? Where's the porn? And most importantly, how was Shame chosen for his job and who is allowed to Correct him? (Okay, so some of you might want to switch the last two around...)

The illustration for this segment is entitled "Sunny Days," and there's a piece of it above. In it, you'll see why I was griping about Ai-Naidari spines. It's also borderline not-work-safe, in that it contains nudity. I didn't do this for ratings, honest!

On a serious note, I really like this act. I think it shows the character as a character, and not necessarily as an omniscient shadow in people's lives. Once we're done with Act 3, we'll be over halfway through the collection; this breath-pause leads us into the last two acts with a better perspective on Shame, Kherishdar and Correction as a whole. I think you're going to enjoy it.

If I get ten donations (amount ≥ $1), I'll upload some extras... in this case, the full sketch for the illustration, which is significantly cropped in the final piece, and the failed version of the composition and my reason for discarding it.

Finally, you can use this post to tell me what other crimes, sins or mistakes you'd like to see handled. Some things already planned include suicide, sociopathy, addiction, another form of child abuse, theft and lying... so anything but those!

The Admonishments of Kherishdar

That's such a splendid drawing--wow. And double wow as I've utterly failed in my attempt to do one for a project. I can't get that swinging line. Guh.

You've said the Ai-Naidari keep pets, so I'd ask for a crime close to my heart: cruelty ro animals.

Er, that would be close to my heart as in I care about animals, not the opposite. :}

What about elder abuse? What happens to the aged Ai-Naidari? Do their children sometimes take advantage of them?

Yowch, good shot. Americans are having terrible problems with elder abuse and abandonment these days. *ponder* Can I request changing this from general abuse to granny-dumping? I'm pretty sure that would be a worse crime than hitting or neglect, for Ai-Naidar. Though on the other hoof, it'd be hard to isolate someone enough to make it seem necessary ... usually it happens when one person is burdened with all the care. Maybe someone from a small family, and not enough help?

I should think the Ai-Naidar would be more interested in erotica than porn. They seem more inclined to elegance and beauty than to raunchiness. Heh ... I bet their lingerie departments are stunning.

Some other things I'd be interested in seeing:
Discrimination
Running away from home
What happens if Shame, in the course of research or Correction, discovers a flaw in society that could be repaired so as to prevent future recurrence of that sin?

Do the Ai-Naidari gamble? Does anyone ever cheat?

I do second this - in the structured society of Ai-Naidari, it seems hard to imagine that any of them would take up the scoundrel's life. But what would a charming rogue do in an Ai-Naidari configuration? And how would, or could they be dealt with?

I mean, think about it this way - they don't have a clear belief that what they're doing is wrong, they may see it as bettering their corner of the universe, at the expense of other corners that can (in their view) spare a little coin, and perhaps the spectacle they've created, the diversion from 'tiresome routine' is their repayment.

From the Ai-Naidari point of view however... Gambling creates winners and losers; they seem much more a communal society where all must work together, so the very existence of gambling, perhaps introduced by aunerai, might be viewed as a form of social illness. Or perhaps they might see it as acceptable in moderation, like wine and the masked celebration, but not to be overdone, and seek to treat the habitual gamblers who go beyond their means, and the cheaters who try to gain more than they should.

And what happens if Shame sees a solution, but it is not within his skill? If someone cheats, but does it very skillfully, how to prove it, and confront them with their sin?

I would like to see how they handle mental illnesses-- things like depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and even things that can be dangerous to others if not treated, like schizophrenia. (The first three I would consider "dangerous to the person" if not treated-- but schizophrenia is often dangerous to the person and others if not treated.)

They don't recognize "mental illness," in the sense of it being a medical disorder.

You'll notice that there are things Shame has been dealing with already that we would have thrown pills at, like the girl in "Cutting" and the man in "Homicidal Ideation."

Persistent, intense outbursts of frustration and rage? I'd love to see how that's handled because I've had such a problem with those in the past and they were really an injury to those around me.

... turned out that the solution wasn't anything I'd been expecting. Sometimes what you need isn't more patience or control or calm...
