I just got an email inviting me to the grand opening of the Academy's new salle, where there will be (I quote), "Appetizers, pizza, beer and fencing."

Um....

Appetizers and fencing never go together, unless it's kabobs.

And pizza and whites don't go because you don't want to spill pizza sauce over your whites.

In my college days, we had fencing drinking games...always a blast. :-)

Thank you. It's an image taken of me in my whites.
I wanted a good fencing photo before I got too old :-)

I know, tell me about it.

One of the older girls at the salle yesterday was like, "I'm going to college next year! I'm SO EXCITED!" And then later was complaining that "I haven't grown any taller for years. It makes me feel so old!"

(This from a teenager who was four inches taller than me, mind you.)

I've watched some of the kids start from the age of 7.
One of them graduated college AND is engaged.
I saw him poolside at a national competition from the backside. I was drooling over the well-muscled, well-built beautiful man standing before me, then he turned around and I was SHOCKED to see him, whose nickname used to be "peanut" because he was so tiny.

I had to go scrub my mind of my "impure" thoughts! LOL

This normally takes place LATE at night after all the underage folks have left the club. And, everyone wears all their gear for safety reasons.

There's King of the Hill game, for every touch against you, you take a shot/drink. For every straight attack against you, two drinks. For every touch done with LINE (or as a toe touch), three drinks. Winner stays up. The winner must then take a long drink.

Or for every touch you SCORE, you take a shot/drink. Winner stays up. Usually we inflict these rules on someone who has stayed up too long as King of the Hill.

For the director/referee, for every touch that s/he gets wrong (as agreed to by EVERYONE present sans fencers, they have to take a drink. Usually when we played, the director was the one who was on deck.

For the folks not-fencing, they 'bet' on who wins. Losers (or winners) have to take a drink or two. Spectators are also free to bet on what type of touch will be made next (riposte, disengage, counterattack, etc) and drink accordingly.

This is usually good for a full round of fencers of 5-7, because you need at least two fencers, a director, and two spectators to heckle!

Or, if the fencing team had been 'partying' too much (in college). After most of everyone is already drunk, we suited up and fenced; a few times on the lawn of our college house, in the middle of the night. ROFL

Oh gosh. It would be fun to watch, but useless. A single beer puts me out like a light. I sleep like a baby for a couple of hours. :)

I don't know how well I'd fare at the game nowadays.
Back in college, I had a much higher drinking tolerance level; not-so-much anymore.

We had a couple of non-drinkers and low-tolerance drinkers as well. The non-drinkers pretty much took photos and heckled (no fair to the already drunk fencers to try fencing someone "sober", but a lot of fun if the drunk fencer was the 'better' fencer to see how much they had to drink before beginners could womp on them!) The low-tolerance drinkers drank what they could (only sips of a half-glass of something just to make them a bit "tipsy").

The game was designed so that you weren't "getting drunk and passing out" but rather, to be able to continue "fencing" despite the buzz.

I've heard many a tale of Olympic and National-level fencers who have fenced with a hang-over or STILL drunk from the previous night festivities and STILL winning their tournies. (and it just wasn't the Russians or any of the Eastern Bloc countries!) LOL.

Beer and fencing? Not such a bad idea compared to my crazy crewmates' idea of fencing in camp by lanternlight, while holding the lanterns in their off hands.

It ended when someone tripped over the rigging and nearly brought the mast down.

Long pointy objects and edged long pieces of metal with handles always go well with alcoholic beverages! Why do you think fencing leaves your off-hand free? You putcher beer der.. ;)

Even the Landskeneckt guys would agree that this is not only a great idea, but its historically accurate! (except the pizza part)

Well, from what I've read, many a salle back in the 15th and 16th century was based out of a tavern or brothel. Or so Amberger states in his Secret History of the Sword.
