Bells?

First off: we have no Earthrise today! For the first time in weeks—months?—we haven’t made the cap. I’ve re-scheduled the post for Tuesday, so it will show up then unless the tips reach cap for today or Saturday. If you’d like to start reading, or catch up on reading, the archive site is up to date and has donation/subscription buttons for your ease of use. >.>

Anyway! My parents recently returned from a trip to India, bringing with them what felt like half the country in brightly-colored goods. One of the things they gave my daughter was a long string of beads and carved elephants. At the end of this string (which is as tall as I am) is a tiny bell. My mother reports she was told that you hang this string beside your bed, and every morning you ring the bell to… inform the gods you’re awake? Or something like that.

Has anyone heard about this custom? I’d like to know more about it, but my Google searches aren’t turning anything up.
